February 13th 2021 From America's first Foodie to some unknowns. Here's my list

Today I thought I would talk about it some of the known and lesser-known culinary figures. People changed the way we eat and look at food. No, I'm not just talking about the Lady of the ladle Julia Child, although I would love to spend a whole blog talking about her. I'm going to talk about 5 figures who not only give me inspiration every day, but gave way to many chefs' past and present.

1.) James Beard

James Beard born in Portland Oregon on May 5th, 1903. You may know him obviously for the James Beard award. Or maybe for his many contributions to the culinary world. But did you know that he should be listed as an LBQTQ Icon as well? James Beard however not really open about it but not closeted either, was in fact gay. Now, this pioneer of cuisine didn't make my list just because of this fact. But because of his many contributions over his long culinary career appearing on the very first cooking show ( even before Julia!) and dozens of cookbooks.

I recommend reading one the biographies written on Beard. Or his autobiography he wrote in 1964 " Delights and Prejudices".

You can find both here

2.) Edna Lewis

Edna Lewis born in Freetown Orange County VA,  in 1916. This chef and the culinary icon were not only looked up to and admired by many, but she was also the Grand Dame of Southern cooking. She did this not only in the south but really made the mark for herself in the Big Apple. She co-owned a restaurant that was frequently visited by the likes of Tennessee Williams and Marlon Brando, just to name a few. She also put her markdown in the world of cookery bookery and was championed by the likes of legendary food editor and writer Judith Jones. Ms. Lewis was given an honorary Ph.D. from Johnson and Wales in her final years.

You can learn more about Edna by picking up these books or maybe even one of her cook
books.

3.) Auguste Escoffier

I can't make this list and not add at least one contributor to Haute Cuisine or Cuisine Bourgeois.  Sure we all might know the name because of the very famous cooking school. But people might not know exactly what Escoffier's contributions were to classical French cooking. He was definitely a leading light, thus why he made it on this list.

Georges Auguste Escoffier was born October 28th, 1846 in Villeneuve Loubet France.  The author of many cookbooks Including " Le Guide Culinaire". Which in my opinion is the most important and momentous.

You can find many works by Escoffier here:

4.) Simone "Simca" Beck

If you are like me, and an avid admirer of Julia Child the name Simone Beck is not a new one to you.

Simone "Simca" Beck was born July, 7th 1904 in Normandy France. She was a recipient of a James Beard award for writing. Not only was Ms. Beck, the co-author of two of the greatest volumes of cook bookery.  Along with Louisette Bertholle and Julia Child she co-authored Mastering the Art of French Cooking in 1961 volume one.  Then the second volume was published in 1971 without Ms. Bertholle. Simone is a solo contributor in her own right when she published Simca's Cuisine. There is no doubt that Ms. Beck should be acknowledged for her contributions to French cooking.

5.) Stanley Tucci

You are probably thinking, what he's an actor why is he on here? Well, that's because he has a few notable contributions to the world of food.

Not only is Stanely Tucci easy on the eyes, but he's a foodie. Ok, so I may have a little crush but that's not why he made the list. He gave a fabulous portrayal of Julia Child's loving and supportive husband Paul Child in the movie Julie and Julia. He is also an author and host of a new show showcasing Italian cuisine
